Shopping Trip
Oldenburg’s city centre is one of the oldest and most beautiful pedestrian zones in northern Germany. Many old houses with beautiful façades, bustling activity with lots of individual owner-operated shops, cafés and restaurants, coupled with the seasonal city gardens (from around mid-May each year) give our city centre a special flair. Just go with the flow.
From our hotel along the city harbour, it takes only 12–15 minutes to walk to our city centre, but be sure to allow time to linger at the city harbour – it’s well worth it!

Bike Ride
Good to know: During your stay, our hotel offers you a free bicycle garage in the courtyard, which is lockable and equipped with charging facilities for e-bikes!
The people of Oldenburg love their bicycles, which is why our network of cycle paths in and around Oldenburg is so good. Whether along the Hunte river, the coastal canal or to one of the many bathing lakes around Oldenburg, waterways play an important role here and offer plenty of beautiful places to stop and rest during your tour. Or would you prefer to cycle from town to town? Cycling to Bad Zwischenahn with its Zwischenahner Meer lake is also a special kind of day trip that is well worth seeing.

Almost all cultural venues are within walking distance of us! The same goes for most of our city’s museums, whether it’s the Horst-Jansen Museum, the Augusteum, the Landesmuseum or the Stadtmuseum, they’re all just a few minutes’ walk from our hotel.

Natur
Oldenburg is a “garden city”. In the middle of the city, you will find not only our beautiful palace gardens, but also the botanical gardens, the Eversten Holz forest and, last but not least, the Hunte river and the city harbour, which characterise the green soul of the city. Everywhere in the residential areas you will find small green spaces, ponds and small waterways. It is only a short walk from the hotel to the castle gardens, and if that is too short for you, you can continue your walk towards the lock at the end of the castle gardens in the Mühlenhunte landscape park. It is possible to quickly reach green spaces through the city in Oldenburg, which is also good to know for dog lovers. From May to August, the Oldenburg city gardens are located in the city centre. Every year, different small or larger green corners are created in different places, inviting you to devote your senses to nature for a while. It is probably also the proximity to nature that allows the people of Oldenburg to live so relaxed. Enjoy natural city life in Oldenburg.
Food and Drink
As a bed and breakfast hotel, we do not offer our guests restaurant service, but our breakfast is ideal for starting the day off right. The large number of restaurants within walking distance, such as AvocadoZest, Glut und Wasser, Heini am Stau and Ols Brauhaus at the city harbour, provide further culinary delights that will see you through the day or evening. If you just want a quick bite to eat, there are various fast food options in the opposite direction at the train station – we are happy to provide you with cutlery for consumption in your room, and you will find free soft drinks on the hotel floor.
We are happy to recommend other restaurants in the city centre; Oldenburg has something to suit every taste. Please reserve a table in good time, especially at weekends, as the people of Oldenburg also love their restaurants and good food.
Good to know: Cold drinks are available to our guests free of charge – around the clock – for self-service on the floors and for consumption in the hotel. Coffee and tea are available free of charge from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in the lobby from our fully automatic coffee machine.
Annual Events
In addition to the changing cultural programme at the various venues in Oldenburg, there are also annual events to look forward to. Some are linked to a Sunday shopping day, making the trip twice as worthwhile. Oldenburg kicks off spring with “Hallo Fahrrad” (Hello Bicycle) on the market square, including Sunday shopping.
The St. Nicholas Market on Schlossplatz attracts visitors with its crafts and design. Ceramic artists from all over Europe gather at Schlossplatz for the International Ceramics Days, and with “Hallo Grünkohl” (Hello Kale), the city and its residents dedicate an entire weekend to their favourite Nordic vegetable at the market square, rounded off with a Sunday shopping event.
Several thousand people are drawn to our city for the Kramermarkt, the Kultursommer, the Stadtfest and the Lambertimarkt – all of these events are within walking distance of the Hermes Hotel!
Would you like to attend a trade fair or event at the Weser-Ems-Hallen or the EWE Arena? These are also within walking distance of us, about 8 minutes away (located behind the railway station).

Oldenburg has many recognised institutions in the field of vocational training and further education. Many of these educational institutions are located in our vicinity. Enjoy our excellent location and included services for your business needs as well. This may make your professional stay in our city more than just a “professional necessity” for you.
First Division Capable
Not only the basketball players from BASKETS Oldenburg but also the VFL women’s handball team represent us in the 1st Bundesliga. The Oldenburg football club VFB is also working hard towards this goal, but somehow it is not (yet) succeeding.
